For $50 this is an awesome bag. Same quality and comfort as some bags that you would be 2x or 3x more for. It is synthetic fill, so it is a little bulkier than others, but unless you are an ultra-light weight gear freak, it won't make a difference. It packed down nice and compact for me for my last backpacking trip. As for the temp rating, although it wasn't 17F where I was, it did get down to the mid to low 30's and I was plenty warm, in fact I was so warm, I had to unzip the bag and drape it over while I slept on my thermarest.
